I’ve had dreams right after falling asleep.  It just depends how tired you are and how quickly you go into deep sleep.  I’ve heard that thing about dreaming being a right-brain function so you can never read too (I saw it on the Batman cartoon, which really calls this information into question), but once I had a dream where there was a stamp on my foot that read: “THIS WILL ALWAYS HAUNT YOU.”  Creepy.
